Pilot escort operators perform critical tasks during every phase of oversize load movement. Each task requires specific equipment such as signs, flags, warning lights, fire extinguishers, and various levels of PPE. The placement of oversize load signs vary based on location.
Warning Flags have varying standards from state to state; some locations require 12 inches by 12 inches while others require a larger 18 inches by 18 inches. Generally, the larger flags that meet the standard are acceptable within the states that require smaller flags. Placement of warning flags on escort vehicles is also a requirement that changes from one state to another.
Warning lights are required for all pilot escort vehicles in addition to working headlights, taillights, brake lights, and emergency flashers. One amber warning light is required to be visibly displayed from 500 feet. This warning light must rotate, oscillate, and/or flash 360 degrees consistent with the minimum requirements of most all locations.
