Rare double earthquake causes Samoa to have a tsunami.
A double earthquake is very rare and highly unlikely. Yet one occurred in Samoa early this month with a magnitude of 8.0 each. The double earthquake caused a massive amount of waves as scientist stated " it produced an extensional motion while the tsunami waves indicated a "thrust" event with compressional movement." The tsunami claimed over 200 lives and left thousands homeless or missing. At first scientist thought that a matter such as this was impossible but after focusing there studies for the past 6 weeks they came to realize that a double earthquake is possible and can be very deadly making this event a prime example.
INDIA: At least 18 children were killed when a school building collapsed
in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand following heavy monsoon
rains. Six children were pulled out safely, but many are still trapped
under the debris, an official said.
ENGLAND: A chlorine gas leak at a school near London led to at least 26
people, including students, being hospitalised on Wednesday. Staff and
pupils at St. Catherine's School in Twickenham, 16 km from London,
were taken for treatment after they complained of runny eyes, a fire
station manager was quoted as saying by Sky News. Simon Brownings,
of the fire brigade command unit, said builders working on an extension
caused the leak.
BULGARIA: The radiation at the Bulgarian Black coast bay “Vromos†is
twice higher than the norm for this area, the Executive Environmental
Agency reports Tuesday. The measurements were made as part of the
annual program for radiation monitoring. In the beginning of August,
the Burgas Regional Governor, Konstantin Grebenarov, issued an order
banning the use of the beach located between the municipalities of the
city of Burgas and the town of Sozopol, near the town of Chernomorets.
At the time Grebenarov said he made the decision after consulting with
experts from the Health Ministry and the Environmental Agency. The
reason for the pollution is deemed to be radioactive waste from the
nearby mine, containing copper and uranium.
NEW ZEALAND: A South Korean trawler sank in the southern ocean
near New Zealand with three sailors confirmed dead and three missing,
authorities said on Wednesday. The Korean registered Oyang 70
activated a distress beacon and then made a mayday call early in the
morning about 400 nautical miles (740 km) east of New Zealand's South
Island. A nearby trawler rescued 45 crew members from life rafts. "We
have so far recovered five life rafts but have been advised there was a
sixth life raft on board. We remain hopeful of locating the three missing
men," said Mike Roberts of New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre
in a statement. A New Zealand airforce plane was helping to search for
the missing men, who include the trawler's captain.
